Overall Job Objective

Summary of Job Duties

This is a Trainee position is for our Building Inspector Career Field. 
Trainee Position is required to obtain one certification within first 6 months of hire.
Trainee may receive $250 Bonus if Certification is obtained within first 3 months of hire.
Starting Pay is $26.00/Hr

 

Hiring Bonus: 
$500 on hire and $500 after successfully 
completing a 6 month probationary period

Department Information
The City of Aurora Building Division is a division of Public Works. The Building Division has three primary areas. The Permit Center Building Plans Review and Building Inspections. Our Staff is dedicated to providing our customers with exceptional project services in the areas of building plan review, permits and inspections. Our goal is to ensure safe buildings and properties for our citizens through a collaborative working relationship with our construction partners.

Eligible Certification:
  • ICC Commercial Building Inspector
  • Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician's License 
  • ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector
  • ICC Commercial & Residential Plumbing Inspector 
  • State of Colorado Licensed Plumber
  • Colorado State Fire Suppression Certification
  • ICC Fire Code I&II 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop knowledge and application of construction materials, building codes and procedures
  • Proper usage and terminology related to technical phases of residential and commercial building construction. 
  • Learn how to successfully examine and process construction documents and apply the building codes
  • Departmental policies and procedures
  • Utilize independent discretion to provide over the phone and in-person interactions with the public for technical code interpretation inquiries and assistance.
  • Obtain (1) of the following Certification within 6 month of probationary period
 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or GED
 
Experience:
  • At least 3 years progressively responsible work experience in construction.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
 
Knowledge:   Knowledge of design, construction, and function in the construction industry.
 
Abilities:  Ability to contribute to a pleasant positive work environment with a positive attitude: show initiative willingness to support and carry out directives; learn, memorize, recall and apply new information ability and willingness to adapt to new and/or unique situations; ability to handle objectionable contacts with tact and diplomacy ability to retain emotional control, honesty and productivity while under pressure from customers, shortage of time, personal problems and requirements of supervisors or coworkers. 

Skills:  Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. 

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possess a Colorado driver's License, with a good driving history.  

Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds;  regular walking and standing
  • Full range of body movements including pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling; hand/foot/eye coordination
  • Operating a  motor vehicle
  • Frequent verbal  communication with employees, contractors, and citizens; vision to read plans, specifications, and other information.
 
Work Environment:
  • Work in and outdoors in all weather conditions;
  • Walks over all types of terrain and navigates construction sites with some exposure to dust, noise, and construction hazards.
 
Equipment Used:
  • Operates a motor vehicle
  • Utilizes personal computer, software, and mobile technology to process work
  • Uses equipment and tools appropriate to the function of this job.
