The City of Aurora is evolving and seeking highly qualified individuals for the position of Building Inspector. The individual will perform technical inspections of construction and installations in new, existing, and remodeled structures to ensure compliance with City and State building and life safety codes.  

Building Inspector I - $18.82 - $31.06
Building Inspector II - $20.70 - $34.17
Building Inspector III - $22.78 - $37.58

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs inspections to ensure compliance with City and State building and life safety codes
  • Occasionally performs plan reviews of construction documents for code compliance prior to issuing permits
  • Record results of inspections
  • Communicates code requirements to customers both verbally and in writing
  • Manages assigned schedules and coordinates routes
  • Attends meetings and assists customers; investigate complaints
  • Performs special projects and additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate's Degree in construction management or equivalent vocational program specializing in one (1) of the following areas: Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Building, or Life Safety. Additional training, experience, and certification in two of the disciplines listed above are required to obtain Building Inspector II status. Additional training, experience, and certification in three of the disciplines listed above are required to obtain Building Inspector III status.

Experience: At least 4 years of progressively responsible work experience for a comparable municipal jurisdiction in the area(s) of education and certification noted above.   An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge: Specialized knowledge of design, construction, and function of Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, and Life Safety systems, as they relate to municipal building codes and enforcement.

Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers; strong verbal and written communication skills; provide assistance to contractors, design professionals, City employees, and the general public regarding code requirements; detect safety hazards and code violations and be able to recommend corrective actions necessary to provide compliance; conduct inspections and render objective and impartial decisions; knowledge of construction methods and systems; read and interpret blueprints, work plans, and maps in relation to the tasks of the job; ability to work overtime on evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.

Skills: Technically proficient in the interpretation and application of codes in the areas of licensure and/or certification.  

Licenses, Certifications and/or Equipment: Certification in at least one (1) of the following: ICC Commercial Building Inspector; Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician's License; ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector; ICC Commercial and Plumbing Inspector, must obtain a 2nd ICC Certification within 6 months of hire. Must obtain a 3rd certification within 1 year of hire.  Must possess a Colorado Driver's License with a good driving history. This position may require the incumbent to regularly use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, computers, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Moderate physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; regular walking and standing; full range of body movements including pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling; hand/foot/eye coordination;  operating a  motor vehicle; frequent verbal  communication with employees, contractors, and citizens; vision to read plans, specifications, and other information.

Work Environment: Works in and outdoors in all weather conditions; walks over all types of terrain and navigates construction sites with some exposure to dust, noise, and construction hazards.

Equipment Used: Operates a motor vehicle; utilizes personal computer, software, and mobile technology to process work; uses equipment and tools appropriate to the function of this job.
