Overall Job Objective

Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora is seeking a part-time staff that will provide assistance to the Child Watch Recreation Activity Leader with the implementation and facilitation of short-term child care service for children ages 1 - 7 years of age. Attendants will help implement a variety of activities which may include; sports, active games, arts and crafts, dance, drama, fitness, music, and various recreational, educational, or cultural enrichment events.
Program times will vary during day, evening and weekends.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides short-term child care and supervision
  • Provides a safe and fun environment in which both children and their parents feel comfortable
  • Provides corrective action as needed
  • Assists the Child Watch Recreation Activity Leader in completing and reporting accidents or injuries occurring in the assigned area; completing required forms for each child placed in and removed from Child Watch. Responsible for the enforcement of all Child Watch Policies, as well as, general building policies
  • Communicate with the lead and supervisor concerning cleaning supplies and program material needed
  • Develop positive relations with customers; communicate recreation programs information to participants and parents
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested
  • Child Watch Recreation Activity Attendant works between 10 and 26 hours a week
  • Schedules vary; Availability from 3:30 PM to 8:30 PM - Monday through Thursday and/or 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM - Saturday
  • We are also looking for individuals who can act as substitutes for the programs
  • This position is considered for "On Call" and is not eligible for City Benefits

Minimum Qualifications

 Must be at least 16 years of age.

Education: Preferred: High School Diploma or GED Certificate.

Experience: Previous experience working with youth. Previous experience babysitting youth. Bilingual skills.
Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to successfully engage participants with disabilities in community recreation program.

Skills: Strong organization and interpersonal skills 

Licensure and/or Certification:  Prefer certification in CPR/First Aid 

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work; ability to lift a maximum of 50 lbs.; may need to lift individual participants into and out of a wheelchair; must be able to push wheelchairs for those in program unable to do so; some lifting required to transport materials to and from sites some standing, walking, bending, and stooping; hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system; vision to read reports and other written material; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment: Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment but will be required to work outdoors, depending on the season, with exposure to dust, noise, and inclement weather conditions.

Equipment Used: Uses standard office equipment including a computer system, copy/fax machines, and multi-line telephones; may require operation of motor vehicle. May be required to utilize personal equipment (vehicle, cell phone, etc.)
