The Investigative Division of the Aurora Police Department is looking for a Forensic Supervisor to coordinate, supervise, and direct the work activities of the Crime Scene Investigations function in the Crime Lab of the department.

The Aurora Police Department

The Vision of the Aurora Police Department is to be the safest largest city in America.  In 2014 we moved one step closer to our vision by being named the Safest Largest City in Colorado and the 16th overall safest city in the nation.  Within the Aurora Police Department there are four separate divisions:  Operations; Metro; Compliance and Professional Standards; and Business Services and employees over 800 Civil Service and Career Service employees whose mission is to Make Aurora Safer Every Day.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises work activities of the crime scene investigations unit including photographing, sketching, videotaping and processing crime scenes and preserving evidence obtained
  • Schedules and coordinates work assignments
  • Resolves problems and conflicts arising during the course of work
  • Prepares a variety of technical and non-technical reports
  • Testifies in court or other legal proceedings, as required
  • Provides general and technical training for assigned employees
  • Provides instruction and training to outside groups on crime laboratory and evidence handling procedures
  • Makes recommendations for selection and disciplinary action
  • Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel
  • Establishes unit work standards and procedures
  • Determines material requirements and maintains appropriate inventory
  • Makes budget recommendations
  • Ensures compliance with operating policy and procedures
  • Assists the Lab Director in the operation of the Crime Laboratory
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminalistics, Physical/Natural Science, or directly related field
Experience:  
  • 4 years progressively responsible experience in forensics experience or police work
  • 1 year lead or supervisory experience
Preferred:
  • Crime Scene Investigation experience
  • 3rd level I.A.I. certification
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

  • Work in any weather condition under adverse physical circumstances

  • Train, evaluate and supervise other employees
  • Must have visual acuity correctable to 20/40 with no color impairment
Licenses and Certifications:  
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Light physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment
  • Vision for reading and interpreting reports and data analysis and preparation
  • Frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communication with employees and citizens
Work Environment
  • Works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to dust and noise, and may encounter fumes from certain chemicals.
Equipment Used
  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
