Overall Job Objective

Summary of Job Duties

The Master Electrician is based at the Otero Pump Station and supports the Homestake Water Project, a partnership between Colorado Springs Utilities and City of Aurora. Therefore, the selected candidate must reside within 35 miles of Buena Vista, Colorado to meet the service territory requirements.

The successful candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting, testing, and repairing a wide variety of water electrical, instrumentation, control, relaying systems and equipment. These systems and equipment stretch over a 100-mile range and are in operation 24/7. You will bring this department to the next level with your excellent instrumentation skills coupled with strong problem-solving abilities and the desire to work in an autonomous environment.

This position requires the successful candidate to work standby and overtime as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installing, repairing, calibrating and maintaining all electrical equipment associated with a Water Pipeline including:
  • 480 volt Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
  • Medium voltage Motor Control Centers electrical and controls equipment up to 4160 volts
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Electric motors
  • Circuit breakers
  • Control circuits
  • Instrumentation
  • Designing and installing new electrical service equipment and controls systems as needed
  • Performing all relevant preventative maintenance
  • Using test equipment to check the functionality and calibration of electrical main circuit breakers
  • Maintaining and updating electrical schematics, blueprints and as-built drawings
  • Documenting work orders, work plans and technical advances
  • Providing technical guidance to peers
  • Complying with the safety and health program in support of an incident and injury free workplace

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code
  • Knowledge of NFPA-70E guidelines
  • PLC calibration, programming, installation and troubleshooting
  • Medium voltage Motor Control Centers electrical and controls equipment up to 4160 volts
  • Variable Frequency Drives
  • Solid State and Relay Motor Controls (MCC) experience 
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and maintaining industrial electrical systems
  • Skilled in performing inspections and preventative maintenance on industrial electrical systems
  • Instrumentation and control knowledge
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Interpersonal and communication skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisors and the general public

What will it take to be successful?  While most people in this occupation would have completed a certified Department of Labor Electrical Apprentice program and hold a Journey Level Electrician license the ideal candidate will have Journey level commercial/industrial electrical experience. Master Electrician license is preferred.  PLC programming and medium voltage and low voltage MCC electrical and controls equipment up to 4160 volts experience is preferred.  Valid Driver's License required.
