City Attorney's Office - Civil Division
The City Attorney's office, Civil Division's mission is to provide a comprehensive range of legal services to our clients in a timely and competent fashion and to vigorously defend any lawsuit filed again the City.  The Civil Division prepares ordinances and resolutions, defends the City in litigation matters, and provides legal counsel to the City offices and City Council.  

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares legal pleadings, briefs, memoranda, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, and correspondence for final submission to Court/Council
  • Develops, maintains and closes legal case files using appropriate standards and maintains confidentiality
  • Performs duties related to the drafting, revision and codification of City ordinances
  • Acts as front desk receptionist in the absence of Administrative Assistant
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications


  • High School diploma or GED. Associates Degree preferred. 

  • At least 4 years progressively responsible secretarial experience, including at least 2 years of experience in a legal office.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

  • Knowledge of general office procedures
  • Legal terminology
  • Legal forms
  • Personal computers including related word processing software applications

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Skill in typing at a minimum rate of 60 net words per minute
  • Skill in the use of personal computers including related word processing software
  • Skill in transcribing machine dictation

  • None at this time

Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

  • Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screens, reports and related department documents
  • Dexterity to operate computer keyboards and other related office equipment
  • Endurance sufficient to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
Work Environment:
  • Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment
Equipment Used:
  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including typewriters, computers, calculators and copy/fax machines
  • Frequently answers telephone
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
