The Public Safety Communications division of the Aurora Police Department is looking for a Senior Public Safety Communications Supervisor to assist with the administration and supervision of all activities of the Public Safety Communications Center un the direction of the Manager of Public Safety Communications.

Public Safety Communications Center
Our Commitment is to provide the highest level of customer service while providing appropriate and expeditious response for calls of service.  We will serve our customers with compassion as the vital link between the public and public safety organizations we serve.  

To be employed by the Public Safety Communications Center you will need to successfully pass a background check, polygraph test, and fingerprint screening, along with other conditions of employment; drug test and verification of employment.  Because of this, there is a longer recruitment process, we thank you in advance for your patience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for direct supervision of all Telecommunicator Supervisors.
  • Ensures calls for service are handled efficiently and effectively
  • Develops methods to improve efficiency
  • Ensures continuity of call taking and dispatching functions during emergency situations
  • Periodically reviews call tapes and monitoring calls
  • Determines quality of service by conducting quality control studies
  • Creates and updates standard operating procedures and guidelines
  • Researches, compiles, and prepares a variety of materials relating to Public Safety Communications.
  • Makes recommendations to the Manager of Public Safety Communications regarding selection, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining assigned employees 
  • Responds to and investigates questions, complaints and inquiries regarding Public Safety Communications Center operations
  • Assists in the development of operational priorities, goals, and objectives
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and municipal laws and regulations, and standards and/or requirements for agency accreditation
  • Functions as the CCIC Terminal Agency Coordinator.
  • Ensures security of and access to restricted telecommunications terminals
  • Testifies in court as necessary
  • Assists in the development of priorities, preparation and monitoring of the department budget
  • Acts as a liaison to county, state and federal agencies
  • Represents Public Safety Communications at meetings and serving on committees
  • Represents the center with the news media as directed for public dissemination of information about the center
  • Oversees the records retention system
  • Responds to the PSAP for major emergencies and is available on-call after hours
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  

  • Associate's Degree related to area of assignment
Experience:  
  • 6 years of public safety communications experience
  • 2 years as a supervisor in communications functions
Preferred:
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience in multi-agency, multi discipline public safety communications center 

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications:  As assigned, specialized certifications may be required such as:
  • NCIC/CCIC certification
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • NIMS certification
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification
  • Emergency Fire Dispatcher (EFD) certification
  • Emergency Police Dispatcher (EPD) certification
Knowledge:  Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and methodologies of the operation of a state-of-the-art, multi-agency, multi-discipline public safety communications center; and all application federal, state and municipal regulations.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Primarily sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds with or without assistance
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment and computer keyboard
  • Vision for reading and interpreting reports and data analysis and preparation
  • Vision with normal color vision to read computer screen
  • Frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communication with employees and citizens, and handle dispatch emergency calls
 
Work Environment
  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; occasionally works nights and weekend
  
Equipment Used
  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
