Overall Job Objective

Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora is seeking a part-time staff that will provide assistance with the implementation and facilitation of therapeutic recreation programs, classes, and activities with individuals of all ages and varying abilities.

Programs locations and times will vary during day, evening and weekends.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of "full time TR staff member", provide assistance with the implementation & facilitation of therapeutic recreation programs for all ages of individuals with varying abilities
  • Responsible for assisting with year round programs including days, nights, and weekends.
  • Effectively communicates with parents, teachers, therapists or guardians, providing appropriate answers and follow up information as necessary
  • Ability to show courtesy, dignity, and redirection for participants who are difficult, hostile, and distressed
  • Provides a safe and supportive learning environment for all participants
  • Ability to show flexibility, effectively adapting behavior and program due to various obstacles
  • Ability to drive a 13 passenger van , as needed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Prefer knowledge or coursework toward therapeutic recreation, education, human services or a related field 

Experience: Prefer experience working with individuals with disabilities in recreation programs or similar activities
 
Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to successfully engage participants with disabilities in community recreation program.

Skills: Strong organization and interpersonal skills 

Licensure and/or Certification: Requires a valid driver's license; Must be able to complete all requirements related to operating a City of Aurora vehicle (including clearing a Motor Vehicle Record check); City of Aurora's defensive driving course

Requires certification in CPR/First Aid within (6 months of hire)
 

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work; ability to lift a maximum of 50 lbs.; may need to lift individual participants into and out of a wheelchair; must be able to push wheelchairs for those in program unable to do so; some lifting required to transport materials to and from sites some standing, walking, bending, and stooping; hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system; vision to read reports and other written material; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment: Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment but will be required to work outdoors, depending on the season, with exposure to dust, noise, and inclement weather conditions.

Equipment Used: Uses standard office equipment including a computer system, copy/fax machines, and multi-line telephones; may require operation of motor vehicle. May be required to utilize personal equipment (vehicle, cell phone, etc.)
