Department Information
The Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department's vision is to connect with the community and be acknowledged as an essential service defining the quality of life in Aurora by encouraging active lifestyles and creating healthy environments for people, nature, and the community.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Plans, supervises, organizes, and develops a program for volunteers to support special events and projects in the Parks, Recreation & Open Space (PROS) Department, and acts as liaison to applicants for temporary use permit and special event facility use of PROS facilities. Coordinates large scale recruitment efforts and consistently provides feedback and recognition to volunteers who support the department.

  • Supports three Special Event Coordinators to implement Aurora's signature events. Works to understand the needs of each event coordinator and their respective events in order to recruit volunteers for operations and customer service positions.
  • Works with corporations, businesses, schools and other community groups to offer volunteer opportunities which mutually benefit PROS and the volunteers.
  • Enhance the facilities and outdoor spaces managed by PROS by recruiting and managing adults and youth within the department's Volunteer Stewardship program.
  • Creates curriculum and provides training sessions for new volunteers. Ensures proper safety training and processes background checks. Procures and distributes the needed materials for each volunteer project.
  • Serves as a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities/information for the 6 divisions within PROS. Pairs projects with the appropriate volunteer or group. Manages the online volunteer management system utilized by the city of Aurora, inputs and analyzes data related to volunteer hours.
  • Advocates for volunteerism in Aurora by partnering with community groups, schools and businesses. Consults with local businesses who currently have employee volunteer programs; provides leadership and support for volunteers as well as providing a forum for open communication and problem solving; promotes and markets volunteer opportunities in order to meet the needs of the department. Works with marketing specialist to promote the volunteer program and its current recruitment initiatives.
  • Knowledge of procedures and city requirements in order to provide citizens direction through the facility permitting requirements and Temporary Use Permits which allow events on city property; monitors special event requests to promote timely approvals of permits.
  • Plan an annual volunteer recognition event and coordinates the aspects of food/beverage, awards and venue booking and management.
  • Prepares meeting agendas, leads meetings and makes presentations and public speaking engagements.
  • Researches volunteer programs on a national level to recommend best practices. Makes recommendations on policies and procedures related to volunteer recruitment and utilization.
  • Assists with budget preparation and monitoring; this includes securing sponsorships and donations to help offset costs for the department
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Organizational Leadership, Volunteer Management, or a directly related field.
  • At least 3 years progressively responsible experience in volunteer management or human/community services.
  • Experience creating volunteer partnerships with businesses, schools and community groups
  • Previous direct supervisory experience with volunteers or staff (preferred)
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge: Knowledge of project management, development, and administration; practices and techniques of volunteer coordination; proven volunteer or employee recruitment, and community/public relations. Knowledge of Microsoft Word programs required, knowledge of volunteer management software preferred.

Abilities: Planning and project management skills required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, citizens, and city officials; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; plan, organize, and implement volunteer programs; supervise and direct the work of volunteers; work some weekends and nights. Ability to work within a team environment with an emphasis on making a difference together.

Skills: Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated capabilities in public relations and communications. Previous event coordination for groups of 250 or more preferred. Organizational and time management skills required. Working with accuracy and follow through are required

  • Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.

This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift up to a maximum of 50 pounds; requires some lifting, carrying, standing, and walking; hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system; vision to read reports and other written material; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees, volunteers, and citizens.

Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment.

Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including a computer system.
