Aurora Water Department
The City of Aurora Water Department is looking a Water Utility Locator who performs skilled and semi-skilled utility location work to identify and physically locate underground structures for homeowners, contractors, and other customers as well as site development activities.

The Water Department enhances and protects the quality of lfe for Aurora citizens by providing safe, dependable, and sustainable water, sewer, and storm water services, today and in the future.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Locates a combination (water, wastewater, storm drainage, re-use, source of supply) of utility lines
  • Communicates verbally and in writing with customers and contractors
  • Maintains and updates records; reads and interprets maps and construction drawings to mark utility lines within accuracy requirements of State laws
  • Conducts field meetings with contractors or customers and other representatives from outside agencies and coordinates the location of utility lines
  • Identifies damage to utility lines and reports information
  • Responds to customer complaints
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
  • Operates specialized equipment and tools in locating each unique utility
  • Creates charts and drawings displaying various utility lines using GIS and other computer software
  • May operate equipment in performing other utilities work
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  

  • High School Diploma or GED
     
Experience:  
  • At least 3 years of related maintenance experience including reading and interpretation of construction drawings
  • At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of confined space entry procedures
  • Practice and techniques of assigned maintenance functions
  • Knowledge of various types of utility lines

Abilities:
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
  • Understand oral and written instructions
  • Operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Read and interpret construction plans and mapping systems
  • Measure, locate, and mark underground utility locations based on plan information and records
  • Communicate location information and resolve conflicts with field construction personnel
  • Ability to work overtime, standby and call back duty with a thirty-minute response time
Skills:
  • Basic drafting/drawing skills; personal computer skills

Licenses and Certifications:  As assigned, specialized certifications may be required such as:
  • Driver's License
  • Colorado Class I Wastewater Collection certificate or the ability to obtain within a specific time as directed by departmental policies
  • Colorado Class I Water Distributioncertificate or the ability to obtain within a specific time as directed by departmental policies

Working Conditions


Physical Demands

  • Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Considerable walking and standing; frequent pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Considerable hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Speech communication to give instructions and provide technical direction
  • Vision to read gauges and instructions and operate equipment
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals
 
Work Environment
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals. Some work may be performed in confined spaces
  
Equipment Used
  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • Operates heavy equipment common to maintenance and construction
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
