The city of Aurora is seeking to hire a Water Utility Technician who will perform skilled work and related duties in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment to construct, repair, replace, and maintain City water, wastewater, reuse and raw water lines for the Water Department.

Aurora Water Department
Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health. 

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

Typical Working hours are from Monday to Friday, 7:15 am to 3:45 pm, with occasional on-call duty, and Snow removal duty

You will be required to submit your MVR, Driver's License, Resume, and copies of your certifications or transcripts.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Entry Level:

  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, hydro-hammers, cranes, large loaders, dozers, and conveyer loaders, perform tasks such as patching, grading, hauling material, pipeline excavation and backfill, and snow removal;
  • Service, maintain, and make minor mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on assigned equipment;
  • Act as lead worker and may assist in training other employees in equipment operation & job tasks;
  • Perform standby duties as required; and perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  

  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience:  
  • At least 4 years progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment. 
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the practices and techniques of heavy equipment operation and maintenance; knowledge of safety practices common to the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Knowledge of water line construction and repair
 
Abilities: Ability to understand and follow complex instructions relative to job assignment; perform strenuous physical work; and work overtime, call back duty, and standby with a thirty-minute response time.
 
Skills: Skill in the operation of heavy equipment.

Licenses and Certifications: 
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • Colorado Class II Water Distribution OR Colorado Class II Collection Certificate
Outside candidates may be allowed a department determined time frame to obtain certifications if selected.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Considerable walking and standing; frequent pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Considerable hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Speech communication to give instructions and provide technical direction
  • Vision to read gauges and instructions and operate equipment
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals
 Work Environment
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals. Some work may be performed in confined spaces
 Equipment Used
  • Operates heavy equipment common to maintenance and construction
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
