Department Information
The Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department's vision is to connect with the community and be acknowledged as an essential service defining the quality of life in Aurora by encouraging active lifestyles and creating healthy environments for people, nature, and the community.  The Recreation Division provides fun recreational programs and facilities for all ages aimed at improving the overall physical and mental health of Aurora's Citizens. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Aquatic Supervisor is engaged through challenging assignments, recruiting and hiring lifeguards, opportunities to grow programs needed and desired by our community, and the ability to grow valuable, lasting relationships in a dynamic work environment. 

Essential duties include:

  • Supports, coordinates and supervises aquatic programs and/or facility staff and activities.
  • Responsible for the recruiting, hiring, training, evaluation and disciplining of assigned regular and temporary employees.
  • Directs and participates in program planning and development.
  • Leads by example to ensure excellent customer service for citizens and program participants visiting Aurora's aquatic venues by establishing high customer service standards for staff and ensuring a high level of accountability to meet those expectations.
  • Sets work priorities and oversees first line supervisors at Aquatic facilities and program staff, setting policies and procedures that require staff to provide top notch customer service
  • Coordinates contracts for services, maintenance and program site.
  • Conducts and implements needs assessments, safety checks, programs standards and evaluates program effectiveness.
  • Assists in budget preparation and manages revenue and expenses closely to ensure strong financial performance.
  • Develops and maintains records. Prepares administrative reports.
  • Assess the condition and functionality of infrastructure systems making recommendations for capital expenditures to support programs or improve aquatic facilities
  • Makes personnel decisions on selection hiring, training, evaluating and developing assigned employees.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration, Leisure Services and Physical Education or a related field or equivalent experience.
Experience:
  • At least 5 years progressively responsible experience in either Aquatics or Recreation Management or a related field, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience. 
An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.

Knowledge: 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation and aquatics program planning, development and administration; and financial management. Requires knowledge of standard aquatic chemical management, mechanical equipment and water balance.
Abilities:
  • Requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens.  Requires the ability to handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must possess the ability to respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Must have the ability to establish and fulfill goals and objectives; plan, organize and direct recreation programs; supervise and direct the work of employees and volunteers while upholding quality customer service internally and externally.  The ability to motivate staff, create a positive work environment, and hold staff accountable for achieving measurable goals and developing their skills.  
  • Shifts for this position require the candidate to be available to work evenings, weekends, weekdays and holidays.
Skills:
  • Strong organization, management, leadership, communication, interpersonal, customer service and planning skills are required.
Licenses, Certificates, and/or equipment required:
  • In order to be successful in this position, it's preferred that applicants have CPO, WSI, WSIT, LGIT, LGT and the ability to obtain a Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.  
You will occasionally use your own personal equipment (i.e.  Vehicle, cell phone, laptop, tools, etc.) while on the job.
 

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: 

  • Light to moderate physical work
  • May require ability to lift up to a maximum of 50 pounds
  • May require lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Regular standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system
  • Vision to read reports and other written material
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment: 
  • Works in an indoor pool complex with exposure to noise and chemicals used for swimming pool maintenance.
 Equipment Used: 
  • Equipment and machinery associated with the operation of a swimming pool including pumps, filters, valves, heaters, chemical feed, and monitoring equipment and associated maintenance equipment; a computer system.
