Summary of Job Duties

The Census Coordinator for the Planning & Development Department serves as the primary contact and coordinator for the city of Aurora's efforts related to the 2020 Census. This position will  manage the day-to-day planning, coordination and execution of census activities and also ensure the implementation and coordination of activities, branding and messaging, and stakeholder engagement.

**This is a 12-24 month, 40 hours per week contract position; this position will qualify for medical benefits and may be eligible for paid holidays and accrued leave time.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the Communications staff with developing marketing and outreach plans, hosting meetings and events, and using traditional and online communication venues. Helps develop content for the city's website and social media.
  • Coordinates with the Census Executive Committee (staff) and Complete Count Committee (stakeholders) and supports the work of its subcommittees.
  • Coordinates efforts with the U.S. Census Bureau and assists the Bureau with identification of hard-to-count neighborhoods/populations that will require special efforts to achieve a complete count.
  • Coordinates with regional, state and federal agencies, community-based organizations, city agencies, and volunteers performing census outreach efforts.
  • Supervise supporting staff and volunteers and engage partner organizations.
  • Create and deliver presentations to City Council, the Census Executive Committee, the Complete Count Committee, stakeholder groups, partner agencies, and city staff.
  • Coordinate timelines, agendas, and complete meeting minutes for internal or public meetings and events.
  • Excellent writing skills to create and edit reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Analyze technical information and reports.
  • Interpret and apply applicable laws, ordinances, and policies.
  • Use video conferencing, webinars, MSOffice 365 and other applicable software packages.
  • Manage the project's budget allocation.
  • Must be willing to travel locally and work flexible/extended hours including weekends and evenings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of experience in any Planning field.
    • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and conducting outreach, media campaigns, and community engagement; also coordination or supervision of support staff and/or volunteers. 
  • Demonstrated management of complex projects, multi-lingual and municipal government experience preferred.
 
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in urban planning, public administration, political science, business, public relations, communications or related field.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the decennial U.S. Census, demographics, local government, project management, public relations or communication, community engagement or organizing, and data collection and management.
 Skills:
  • Maintain respectful and effective working relationships with city employees and members of the culturally and socioeconomically diverse Aurora community.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:  Light to sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 25 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
 
Work Environment:  Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment.
