The Public Works vision is to effectively promote and maintain a high level of economic
welfare and quality of life in Aurora through the planning, design, construction, inspection,
review, approval, and maintenance of Aurora's transportation and drainage infrastructure. The
Public Improvement Inspections Division and Materials Lab are responsible for the review of materials, and inspections of public improvements such as streets, walks, curbs, and gutters.
The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.
- Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Work in a multi-disciplinary team to support Public Works applications and functions
- Oversight of construction compliance
- Representing the City with external and internal parties
- May participate in the creation of function design, materials, and technical standards
- Supervises inspections and materials lab staff, including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures
- Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries about construction-related issues as assigned
- Makes recommendations and decisions on inspections and materials associated with construction of public improvements
- Serves as liaison with departments, developers, and consultants
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or directly related field
- 8 years of related experience
- Lead or supervisory experience is preferred
- Knowledge of principles and practices related to the construction of streets, water lines, sewer lines, and other public infrastructure
- General knowledge of materials used in the construction of municipal public infrastructure
- City standards and specifications
- Code enforcement techniques and principals
Licenses and Certifications: As assigned, specialized certifications may be required, such as:
- Driver's License
- Professional Engineer's License. required
- Working Conditions
- Physical Demands:
- Moderate physical work which requires the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds with or without assistance
- Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
- Vision for data analysis, preparation, to read plans, specifications, and other information
- Hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer keyboard
- Foot/eye coordination for operation of a motor vehicle for field inspections
- Frequent communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
- Regular walking and standing
- A full range of body movements including pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling
- Primarily works in a clean, comfortable environment
- May perform some outdoor work for field inspections
- Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
- Operates a motor vehicle; personal computer, measuring equipment such as tapes, levels and micrometers; and camera
- This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
