The GIS Specialist position will be responsible for a variety of GIS tasks related to supporting the diverse needs of the Aurora Water Department including: data collection and interpretation, data analyses, data/database management, cartography, and continued support of mobile and web GIS technologies.

**Please note, this is a 12-24 month, 40 hours per week contingent position. Under the Affordable Care Act this position will qualify for medical (health only) benefits and will be eligible for paid holidays and accrued leave time.

This position will close Monday, July 23,2018 @ 12 noon. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

This position is a responsible technical and professional position in the Planning Services Sector of the Aurora Water Department.  The Planning Services Sector is responsible for long range planning, asset management and GIS support for all divisions within the Department.  Work is performed under administrative direction of the Aurora Water GIS Supervisor.  The successful candidate will participate in Aurora Water's Planning and Engineering Division in the following capacity:
 

  • Assists with infrastructure digitizing and/or attribute input.  Current projects include:
    • Proposed Infrastructure
    • Wastewater System Data Updates
    • Water System Vault data capture
    • Stowmwater system clean up and classification
  • Assists with new infrastructure input into GIS and integration with INFOR (asset management system)
  • Performs cartographic tasks including:
    • Creates maps for various department divisions (project delivery, water resources, engineering, finance, etc.)
    • Creates and maintains metadata
    • Manages map data including compiles externally sourced data, maintains current in-house datasets, and ensures cartographic data is accessible.
  • Processes and shares data for department GIS applications (system models, asset management, master planning etc.) and fulfills external data requests as needed.
  • Performs GIS analysis to support decision making.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The hiring department may include job related experience, training, education or license and certification preferences at the time of recruitment. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:  Assoociate's degree in GIS, Cartography. Drafting, or directly related field.  Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience: 

  • At least 2 years professional level GIS services preferably in projects related to water, sewer, and storm drain projects. 
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
  • Experience with programming, network systems, web services, INFOR Public Sector and Collector for ArcGIS considered a plus.

Knowledge: 
  • Working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software,  cartographic design, public utilities, and experience reading/interpreting Engineering design drawings are required.
  • Knowledge of related software ArcGIS Online and/or Portal for ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, INFOR Public Sector, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Innovyze and SQL considered a plus.
Abilities:  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and citizens, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; analyze and compile technical information and reports; make presentations; and interpret and apply applicable laws, ordinances, and policies.

Skills:  Strong analytical and interpersonal skills. 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:  GIS related registrations/licenses preferred.  Colorado driver's license with a good driving history. 
 

Working Conditions

WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: 

  • Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screens, printouts, and related documents; dexterity to operate a computer system and other related equipment
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
  • Endurance sufficient to sit and work at a computer for long periods of time.
 Work Environment:  Works in a clean, comfortable environment.
 
Equipment Used:  Uses standard office equipment to include personal & enterprise computer systems.
