Department Information
The Engineering Division, of the Public Works Department, plans, designs, constructs, and manages capital improvement, utilities, intersection, facilities, and fence projects; reviews and approves civil engineering plans; and fulfills traffic engineering requests (i.e. evaluate need for traffic signs and signals, review signal timing, coordinate construction detours, etc.)?.
 
The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project management in a multi-disciplinary team to support Public Works applications and functions
  • Manages projects from original concept through final implementation
  • Defines project scope and objectives
  • Develops detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans and status reports
  • Ensures adherence to quality standards and reviews project deliverables.
  • Produce and maintain digital maps, plats, engineering drawings and cartographic records through the utilization of CAD/GIS systems
  • Bring non-GIS based workflows/data into a GIS environment
  • Providing web-based or mobile GIS solutions
  • Creates, defines and inputs attributes of related databases
  • Engaging with internal and external customers to understand functional requirements
  • Researches and reports findings verbally or in writing and prepare visual displays
  • Computes survey and engineering parameters utilizing coordinate geometry
  • Utilizes software to create conceptual engineering exhibits for municipal improvements
  • Provides technical support to service recipients and providers
  • Conducts project meetings
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Cartography, Drafting, Computer Mapping, GIS or directly related field
     
Experience:  
  • 3 to 5 years of combined Cartographic and GIS experience

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
  •  Have a familiarity with municipal infrastructure including the functions of the Public Works Department.
  • Knowledge of coordinate geometry software, ESRI's Arc/Info, ArcMap, SDE, and Collector GIS software and command line operation
  • Python scripting and ESRI Online-web mapping. AutoCAD experience is desirable

Abilities:
  •  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Ability to effectively operate the specified electronic data processing equipment and software
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize assigned tasks with other employees or private contractors, specify project deadline and service recipient requirements when coordinating and prioritizing assigned tasks

Skills:
  • Skill in the utilization or interpretation of engineering drawings, maps, and other documents or equipment common to the assigned tasks.

Licenses and Certifications:  
  • Drivers License with good driving record

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer and related equipment
  • Vision to read and produce design work
  • Speech and hearing to maintain communications with other employees 
 
Work Environment
  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; occasionally works nights and weekend
 
 
Equipment Used
  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
