The Recreation Division of the PROS (Parks, Recreation and Open Space) Department is committed to providing fun recreational programs and facilities for all ages aimed at improving the overall physical and mental health of Aurora's Citizens. We are currently seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for a career in the Recreation Division. The Recreation Specialist coordinates and supervises the development, implementation and operation of Central Recreation Center aquatic program and facility to ensure quality customer service.

- PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Recreation Specialist is engaged through challenging assignments, recruiting and hiring lifeguards, opportunities to grow programs needed and desired by our community, and the ability to grow valuable, lasting relationships in a dynamic work environment.
Essential duties include:
- Supports coordinates and supervises aquatic programs and/or facility staff and activities.
- Responsible for the recruiting, hiring, training, evaluation, and disciplining of assigned regular and contingent employees.
- Directs and participates in program planning and development.
- Leads by example to ensure excellent customer service for citizens and program participants visiting Aurora's aquatic venues by establishing high customer service standards for staff and ensuring a high level of accountability to meet those expectations.
- Sets work priorities and oversee front line program staff, setting policies and procedures that require staff to provide top-notch customer service.
- Conducts and implements need assessments, safety checks, program standards and evaluates program effectiveness.
- Assists in budget preparation and manages revenue and expenses closely to ensure strong financial performance.
- Develops and maintains records. Prepares administrative reports.
- Makes personnel decisions on selection hiring, training, evaluating, and developing assigned employees.
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration, Leisure Services, Physical Education or a related field or equivalent experience.
Experience: At least 3 years progressively responsible experience in either Aquatics or Recreation Management or a related field, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles and practices of aquatics programming, planning, and development. Requires knowledge of standard aquatic chemical management, mechanical equipment, and water balance.
Abilities: Requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens. Requires the ability to handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must possess the ability to respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
Must have the ability to establish and fulfill goals and objectives; plan, organize aquatic programs; supervise and direct the work of employees and volunteers while upholding quality customer service internally and externally. The ability to motivate staff, create a positive work environment, and hold staff accountable for achieving measurable goals and developing their skills.
Shifts for this position require the candidate to be available to work evenings, weekends, weekdays and holidays.
Skills: Strong organization, management, leadership, communication, interpersonal, customer service and planning skills are required.
Licenses, Certificates, and/or equipment required:
You will occasionally use your own personal equipment (i.e. Vehicle, cell phone, laptop, tools, etc.) while on the job.
- Driver's License with a good driving history.
- WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certifications required.
- LGT (Life Guard Training) certifications required.
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO),
- Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO),
- WSIT (Water Safety Instructor Trainer)
- LGIT (Life Guard Instructor Trainer) certifications preferred.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands: Sedentary to moderate physical work depending upon assignment; may require the ability to lift 50 pounds with or without assistance; may require lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds; may require regular standing and walk; may require bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing; hand/eye coordination for operation of the computer; may require foot/eye coordination for operation of a motor vehicle; vision to read reports and other written material; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; may require outdoor
work with exposure to dust and noise.
Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel
Equipment Used: Personal computer with related software applications; may require operation
