Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora Naturalist program is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated part time, temporary employee to assist with nature center staffing, program planning and presentation, and event staffing for our busy programming season (March - October).

This position is a temporary, part time and seasonal position that is supervised by the senior natural resource specialist. It is generally staffed March-October. Employment may extend beyond October, depending on budget and staffing needs. On average, this position works 24 hours a week, Friday - Sunday, but some weeks may vary. Applicant must be willing to adjust schedule to work evenings, holidays and partial days, depending on programming needs.
 
This position uniquely combines highly energetic and interactive work with quiet, self-directed project time. Applicant should be able to stand and interact for hours at busy events, get on the floor and move like animals with preschoolers and be motivated to start and complete projects in a quiet and unsupervised environment for long periods of time.
 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads or assists with Scout programs, nature-themed birthday parties, guided hikes, day camps, preschool programs, and curriculum-based programs for school-aged children in the Aurora and Cherry Creek school districts.  Locations include, but are not limited to, Aurora parks and natural areas, nature centers, and schools.
  • Staffs information desks (answer phones, greet visitors, impromptu center and exhibit tours, etc.) at the Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch, Senac Creek Nature Center at Aurora Reservoir, or the Plains Conservation Center.
  • Assists full time naturalists with interpretive programming, pre-k through adult age groups.
  • Plans, researches and presents interpretive programming for a variety of audiences.
  • Assists in researching, updating, designing and installing interpretive exhibits on local plant and animal life as assigned.
  • Staffs a busy and interactive event booth for large, city-sponsored public events such as Punkin' Chunkin', Summer in the City and the Adams and Arapahoe County Fairs.
  • Assists with live animal care for a small collection of reptiles, amphibians and arthropods.
  • Performs maintenance and light cleaning such as picking up trash, pulling weeds, vacuuming, dusting, shoveling snow, tidying restrooms, sweeping and mopping.
  • Assists with summer Generation Wild programming, which can include overnights at Aurora Reservoir.
  • Makes educational contacts with park users regarding park rules and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High School Diploma or GED

Experience:

  • At least one year of experience (either volunteer or paid) teaching science in formal or informal environments.
  • A passion for interacting positively with people of all ages and abilities.
  • A willingness to teach and work with various audiences, which can include preschool-aged children and their adult caregivers, adults with developmental disabilities, and English language learners.
  • A willingness to teach scientific concepts and principles such as adaptation, evolution, biology and ecology.
  • Flexibility in schedule and working environments varying from loud, busy and chaotic to quiet and focused.
  • Willingness to work weekends and some evenings and holidays.
  • Excellent driving record; applicants selected for an interview are required to present a current Motor Vehicle Record report if offered the position.
  • Must have own reliable transportation and be able to get on your own to any Aurora Parks, Recreation and Open Space property.
  • Willingness to complete a background check.
  • Well organized and self-motivated.
  • Spanish language skills desired, but not required.
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Certified Interpretive Guide certification through the National Association for Interpretation a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Primarily physical and active work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds; lifting, carrying, walking and standing; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; frequent speech communication with fellow employees, and Aurora citizens.

Work Environment: Works primarily in recreation facilities, public buildings and/or parks. 

Equipment Used: May use standard office equipment including, computers, calculators, copy/fax machines; may answer telephone.
