Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora Water Department is seeking an experienced and motivated senior water utility supervisor.  This position performs supervisory level activities while overseeing other supervisors, in support of maintenance and operations activities and directives in a water treatment plant.

Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the operations and maintenance of a water treatment plant
  • Serves as Operator in Responsible (ORC) charge for the facility
  • Responsible for monitoring plant records including operations logs and chemical inventories
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding changes to the control process
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and internal water quality guidelines and regulations
  • Ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures
  • Coordinates work activities with stakeholders and other treatment facilities
  • Works closely with facility Chief Plant Operator and Maintenance supervisor
  • Assists in preparation of reports as required by regulatory and other agencies
  • Participates in design, planning and organizing for capital improvement projects
  • Oversees employee training
  • Responsible for safety of personnel by training employees in proper safety procedures and monitoring work in progress
  • Evaluates performance and administers performance evaluations for assigned plant staff
  • Participates in preparation and administration of budget for the treatment facility
  • Monitors expenditures
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  

  • Associate's degree in water technology, water quality, environmental science or related field
     
Experience:  
  • 5 years of water operations experience
  • Lead or supervisory experience preferred

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of water treatment methods, procedures, and techniques
  • Knowledge of chemistry, hydraulics, flow principles, water analysis methods, and pumping operations
  • Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance practices for water treatment facilities and equipment
  • Knowledge of computers and programs used in the operations of a water treatment plant

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, managers, and citizens
  • Resolve treatment problems and ensure effective operations
  • Handle emergency situations in a professional manner
  • Supervise other employees
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment required for the job and able to meet requirements under the Aurora Water Respiratory Protection Program

  • Skill in supervising employees

  • Computers and related software

Licenses and Certifications:  
  • Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record
  • Colorado Water Treatment Plant Operator's Class A Certificate required
    • Water certificates from other states will be evaluated on an individual basis 
  • Supervisory Certification or training

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands

  • Moderate physical work requiring the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance
  • Regular lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Regular walking and standing to monitor control room and treatment plant operations
  • Pushing, pulling, and climbing to check system equipment
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard and treatment plant controls
  • Foot/eye coordination for operation of a motor vehicle
  • Vision to read and interpret written reports and control room gauges
  • Speech communications for communication with employees and citizens
  • Hearing and listening for instructions and warning signals
 
Work Environment
  • Works primarily indoors in a treatment plant facility with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes
  • Some outdoor work
 
Equipment Used
  • Operates treatment plant equipment, computer, and motor vehicles
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
