Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora is looking for a Temporary Part-Time Shelter Assistant. This position will provide transportation, humane care and treatment for sheltered animals, cleaning and maintaining kennel facilities while providing assistance to patrons at the Animal Shelter locating in Aurora, Co.

This is a temporary, part-time position, providing up to 30 hours per week with an end date of 09/07/2019 and is not eligible for medical benefits.

  • Meets with potential adopters to inform and assist in the process of adoption
  • Educates prospective adopters in adoption of suitable pets
  • Collects cash, credit card and check payments for adoption fees and donations
  • Creates receipts, reconciles cash, credit and checks at end of day
  • Reports any discrepancies to management
  • Assists with kenneling and movement of animals and updates animal records to reflect movement
  • Performs physical exam of animals and veterinarian services tasks: including administering of vaccinations and performing data entry to update animal records Handles and moves animals to facilitate the interaction between animals and patrons upon adoption
  • Monitors and maintains animal food and shelter supplies
  • Observes animals for signs of disease or injury and assists in rechecking animals Provides humane care, treatment and safe handling of animals in the satellite facility including feeding, cleaning and enrichment
  • Maintains proper functioning and safety of kennel equipment
  • Takes regular inventory of animals and reports discrepancies
  • Fosters teamwork and provides assistance to division staff and volunteers
  • Directs and provides guidance for volunteers
  • Facilitates transport of animals from shelter to satellite facility for adoptions
  • Transports animals: including driving, cleaning, and maintaining vehicles assigned to satellite facility
  • Assists in janitorial and light maintenance
  • Performs additional duties as assigned



  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have at least 1 year of animal shelter or kennel environment experience. Experience providing high level of customer service is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
  • General knowledge of companion animal welfare, breeds, and species.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and citizens; handle difficult or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; Ability to complete work without close supervision, provide humane care and treatment for a variety of animals; perform euthanasia; and operate a City vehicle.
  • Skill in handling animals; providing friendly service to customers; excellent interpersonal communication skills; high attention to detail.
Licenses, Certificates, and/or Equipment Required:
  • Must have a valid driver's License with a good driving record.

This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.


Physical Demands:  Moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 75 pounds with assistance; frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; regular walking and standing; a full range of body movements including bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, and crawling; foot/eye coordination to operate a motor vehicle; Work performed in high noise level areas.  Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces.

Work Environment Subject to animal bites or scratches; works primarily in a satellite adoption facility with exposure to dust, noise, water, animal dangers, odors, and fumes; some work performed outdoors or offsite; able to work with rotating hours, holidays, weekends and a flexible schedule.

Equipment Used Operates a motor vehicle; uses a variety of hand tools and equipment common to kennel operations.
