Water Utility Worker - O&M
- Summary of Job Duties
- The City of Aurora Water Utility Worker performs manual labor duties and will assist with routine maintenance and repair functions for one of multiple divisions within the Aurora Water Department. Employees in this position will demonstrate their work by modeling the Core 4 Values of: Customer Service, Professionalism, Integrity, and Respect.
This Maintenance job opportunity is a pro-active recruitment effort with the goal of pre-selecting qualified applicants for placement into positions as they become available. This is an entry level position that is often vacated due to advancement in rank through the city's career development opportunities.
Types of positions available:
- Fulltime: Employee who works 40 hours on average and eligible for full city benefits to include; medical, dental, vision, paid holidays & leave, etc.
- Temporary: Employees who work an average of 40 hours a week and are eligible for medical benefits only and paid holidays. This temporary position will be established on a yearly contract and does have the possibility to be converted into a fulltime position, per the needs of the department.
- PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Service - Meter Maintenance
Performs repair, replacement, installation, and testing of large (1½" -12") water meters and assists with repair of water service or meter flange leaks. Performs scheduled, "during regular work hours" or "after hours" alternate water source connections that provide water to hospitals, medical facilities, schools, restaurants & other businesses that require water service during the emergency repair of water main breaks. A majority of Meter Maintenance work is performed in damp and cramped below ground confined spaces.
The Wastewater Section performs preventive and emergency maintenance of wastewater mainlines. These tasks are performed daily using Vac-Con combination sewer cleaners and RST Closed Circuit Television equipment as well as other various support trucks and equipment. The vast majority of work is performed above ground so that entry into manholes is infrequent. The nature of our work is preventative so we seldom have after hour's emergencies that require employees to respond to work at odd hours. A class B CDL is required for daily maintenance activities as well as snow removal operations during the winter. All Wastewater employees participate in the stand-by program that requires being "on-call" 24-7, two to three weeks per year.
Maintenance & Mechanical (M&M)
This section does repair and maintenance on waterline street valves, pressure control valves, air relief valves, fire hydrants, and the raw water delivery systems. Works in the street for maintaining valves, in confined space (vaults) for control valves and air relief valves and off to the side of the roads for maintaining fire hydrants and raw water. All work is manual labor intensive but overtime is minimal except for snow removal and occasional emergency operations.
Construction & Repair (C&R)
This section of Water T & D is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 1500 miles of pipeline. Core functions include emergency water and service line repairs, fire hydrant, valve and vault rehabilitation or replacement. Sewer repairs for gravity, force mains and reuse piping including manhole maintenance within the right of way are a duty as well. Water main replacement throughout the summer months and snow removal in the winter months. Overtime is a requirement of the job so the ability to work call back duty must be a high priority, and is a condition of this area.
The Stormwater Section within Aurora Water's Operations & Maintenance Division is responsible for a variety of tasks. Work assignments or activities can change daily depending on weather, workloads, and projects. Work activities may include the following: tree removal, mowing, trimming, chemical applications to control weeds, stormwater infrastructure inspections, maintenance and repair of stormwater pipes and culverts, concrete repairs, work in high traffic areas, and work in off-road areas along creeks or channels. Snow removal by hand and with plow trucks is another function performed by the Stormwater Section. Typically this position does not require a lot of overtime, but maintenance workers are required to work overtime when performing streets snow removal and when essential staff is required to respond to emergencies that occur within the Aurora Water Department or the city of Aurora.
In addition, all divisions will perform the following primary duties and responsibilities:
- Loads and unloads tools
- Repair and replacement activities
- Perform routine equipment maintenance
- Assist work crews in the installation, repair, testing and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels and structures, large water meters, valves, fire hydrants, and other equipment
- Perform tasks using tools such as hand tools, shovel, jackhammer, and power tools
- May assist with on-call shifts as needed
- Assist Public Works department with snow removal activities
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 1-year work related manual labor experience, as listed in the Primary Duties & Responsibilities section.
Repairing and Maintaining Mechanical Equipment:
- Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles.
- The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
Attention to Detail:
- The job requires being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions
- Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively
- Ability to work overtime, call back duty, and standby with forty five-minute response time.
Licenses and/or Certificates:
- Skill in the use of ground maintenance equipment and the use of hand tools preferred.
- State Issued Driver's license with a good driving history
- Current Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire date
- WORKING CONDITIONS
- Physical Demands:
- Heavy physical work; requires the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds, with or without assistance
- Requires frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing over 50 pounds, with assistance
- Considerable walking and standing
- Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing
- Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles;
- Vision for reading gages and written instructions
- Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals
- Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, odors, and fumes
- Some work may be performed in trenches and/or confined spaces
- Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions.
- This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
